  • Free Christmas tree recycling in Derbyshire Dales

From 7 January Derbyshire Dales District Council will be helping local people recycle their real Christmas trees. All residents have to do is place the tree at the edge of their property on their usual green/recycling collection day by 1 February and the tree will be composted along with other garden materials. Any tree over 5ft in length must be broken or sawn down to a manageable size, with decorations and plant pots removed. Alternatively, trees can be taken to the nearest household waste recycling centre. Plain Christmas cards and wrapping paper can be included in residents' kerbside cardboard and paper recycling to be collected by the District Council’s contractor Serco. Foil-backed and glittery cards and paper should not be included, but placed in general household waste grey bins or black sacks. Excess recycling can be placed at the side of recycling containers, but residents should make sure it is easily identifiable and suitably contained in a transparent container such as a stacker box rather than a black bag. Any excess card, paper and magazines must be separated from other excess recycling such as glass, plastics, cans, beverage cartons, aerosols and foil trays. Cardboard should be flattened after removing all staples, packaging tape and polystyrene and bubble wrap. Any pieces that will not fit in a recycling container can be flattened and placed next to the container for collection - large cardboard boxes should be flattened and broken down into smaller pieces no wider than 0.5m to fit the recycling compartment of the collection trucks. Small waste electrical and electronic equipment can be disposed of at one of the District Council’s electrical recycling banks in car parks at Lido, Matlock; Wirksworth’s Canterbury Road and Bakewell’s Granby Road. Derbyshire Dales residents can use the online postcode search at www.derbyshiredales.gov.uk/collectioncalendar to check on their collection cycle, where they can also download and view their 2019 collection calendar. Anyone without online access who needs assistance can call the District Council’s Waste Helpline on 01629 761122.

  • Christmas and New Year Waste and Recycling Collections

Christmas and New Year bin collections Derbyshire Dales residents have been reminded that Christmas and New Year bank holidays mean bin collections for most residents will be one day later than usual over the festive fortnight. The only exception is the Tuesday collection scheduled for Christmas Day itself, which will take place three days earlier on Saturday 22 December. As Christmas Day falls on a Tuesday this year, it means the week leading up to Christmas - including Christmas Eve - will be business as usual, apart from the additional Saturday collection for usual Tuesday households on the 22nd. The District Council’s contractor Serco will not be working Boxing Day but will collect usual Wednesday waste and recycling on Thursday 27 December, working extra days on Saturdays 22 and 29 December and 5 January. Residents are asked to note that no additional household waste will be collected, so are advised to make sure all their household waste is contained in their grey bin with the lid shut, or, for homes on a sack collection, in four standard sized black sacks. A District Council spokesperson said: “Residents should limit the amount of household waste they put out for landfill, but we are always happy to take excess recycling. All we ask is that any additional material is left at the side of recycling containers, making sure it is easily identifiable and suitably contained. “We recommend using transparent containers, such as stacker boxes, rather than black bags, so we can easily identify the contents, and ask that any excess card, paper and magazines are separated from other excess recycling. Cardboard must be flattened and broken down into smaller pieces no wider than 0.5m to fit in the recycling compartment of our trucks.” More information on presenting excess recycling can be found online at www.derbyshiredales.gov.uk/excessrecycling Food waste collections will continue to happen weekly and recycling collections fortnightly. To help prioritise household waste and recycling collections at this busy time of year, all garden waste (green bin/compostable sacks) collections are suspended from Saturday 22 December to Saturday 5 January inclusive. Every household in the district received a Christmas and New Year collections timetable in the October issue of the District Council’s Dales Matters publication, and a collection calendar is also available view or download online at www.derbyshiredales.gov.uk/mycollection Christmas Collection Poster

  • Free Parking in Derbyshire Dales throughout December

Derbyshire Dales District Council is encouraging people to ‘shop local’ this Christmas by introducing free parking across the district from 1st December. In a scheme designed to boost trade, for the 11th year in a row it will be free to park in any District Council pay and display car park after 2pm throughout December. The free parking initiative was introduced by the District Council in 2008 to help local residents and businesses during the economic recession. District Council Leader Councillor Lewis Rose OBE said: “It is well documented that these are tough times financially for local government, but we are absolutely committed to our number one priority of supporting and encouraging a thriving district. “So while car parking income is vital in helping us to maintain some of the excellent car parking, environmental and recreational services we provide for local people and visitors, we are delighted to announce the continuation of an important initiative that undoubtedly helps local businesses and our residents at this important time of the year.” The free parking from 2pm throughout December comes on top of residents’ parking concessions that allow local people to park free every day of the year up to 11am and after 4pm. Free parking permits were issued to every one of the 34,000 households across the Derbyshire Dales back in March. It means Dales residents have free parking for 21 hours each day over the festive period, which helps local people and local traders. Free parking extends to midnight each day and motorists are reminded not to leave anything valuable in their vehicles as the lead up to Christmas can also be a choice time for thieves.
