DERBYSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL YOUNG ACHIEVERS AWARDS 2009

Last year, as you may be aware, the county council held its tenth very successful awards for young people aged between three and 18 years. Over 96 youngsters received recognition for their outstanding achievements in fighting an illness, living with a disability, academic, artistic and musical success or for doing good things for their communities, families, schools and each other.

Nominations for last year's awards were received from parish and district councils, schools, members of the public, community groups and voluntary organisations. Almost all nominations met the entry criteria and a special "Oscar-style" ceremony was staged to present the young people with their Young Achiever award. lt's worth noting that over 70% of Derbyshire Young Achievers receive no other formal recognition of their achievements.

We are now planning the Derbyshire Young Achievers 2009 event and would be very pleased to hear about any young people in your parish or district who you feel deserve an award. We particularly want to hear about youngsters who have shown extraordinary:

bravery in fighting an illness or riving with a disability

or

kindness in helping others

or

commitment to improving their school, community or local environment

or

sporting, musical, artistic or academic success.

This is not a competition. All youngsters who are judged to meet any of the above criteria will be invited to a special reception on Friday 11 December to receive an award and a token of our appreciation.

People can nominate a youngster online at www.derbvshire.gov.uk/voungachievers or phone Cllr Shirley Holt for a form to be posted to Jenny Tozer, Derbyshire County Council, County Hall, Matlock , DE4 3AG by Friday 16 October.
