Scouting for Boys

1St Calver Scout Group, has been in existence since 1964 and through the intervening years many members of the local community have enjoyed the traditions and activities that have been provided by the hard work of a number of adult leaders. Currently we have Cubs (age 8-10) and Scouts (age 10 - 14) Unfortunately we are unable to run the youngest section (Beavers age 5 - 8) due to lack of leaders.

Cubs have recently completed their D.I.Y. badges where they have made a number of items from wood including bird nesting boxes and cup/coat hooks. They have also been busy painting a 2m picture of the Fleur de Lys (The Scout Emblem) on the wall of the Scout Hut.

The Scouts have recently completed their outdoor challenge which includes a number of camping activities and also their fitness challenge which culminated in an 11 mile bike ride round Derwent & Howden dams in November! Currently the Scouts are building a Scoutcar which is a HPV (human powered vehicle) and will hopefully be competing in the National Scoutcar championships to be held at Blackpool in July.

The Scout District held their annual St George's Day Parade at Calver this year on Sunday April 27th. They marched from the Cricket Pitch along Donkey Lane down Smithy Knoll Road and along the main road to the Church, accompanied by Bakewell Brass Band.

I'm sure most people are familiar with the Scout Motto - Be Prepared, but I wonder how many people know what the aim of the Scout Association is?

The aim is: To promote the development of young people in achieving their full physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potentials, as individuals, as responsible citizens and as members of their local, national and international communities.

The method of achieving the Aim of the Association is by providing an enjoyable and attractive scheme of progressive training, based on the Scout Promise and Law and guided by adult leadership.

With this in mind we need more adults to volunteer to become leaders in all sections so if you feel like giving it a try why not give us a call.
