Letters support Stoney School

More than 9,000 letters of protest have flooded into County Hall pleading with the education authority to keep open a village school.

Derbyshire County Council is consulting on plans to close Stoney Middleton Primary School because of difficulty attracting a headteacher and falling pupil numbers, resulting in inflated costs of educating each child.

But the Friends of Stoney Middleton School group are rallying around to keep it open, and on Monday delivered the thousands of protest letters to the council buildings in Matlock.

Beth Ely, the former head teacher of the school, said "I've always known that the school had the support of the community, but I was just amazed at the response we had."

A public meeting with Councillor Alan Charles, Derbyshire County Council's cabinet member for school planning and support, will take place at the school on Thursday, 2 November at 6.30 pm.

Councillor Charles is the cabinet member who will decide whether to recommend closure of the school.
